MOF Japanese Sweets & Coffee @ Sunway Pyramid

Sunway Pyramid is my usual hanging out place, but when it comes to food, I always have to scratch my head because there're way too many selections. Opting for something creative, I immediately think of Ministry of Food (MOF) Japanese Sweets & Coffee!

Being famous for their Hokkaido soft serve ice cream and their funky creations, I'm thinking how adventurous should I go when choosing my lunch there.

#1 Ocha
Back to basic, it's my habit to drink green tea upon entering any Japanese restaurant.

#2 Tonkatsu Tuna Bento Set @ RM 14.90

This lunch box comprises of fresh tuna chunks, with chopped crabstick meats, eggs, cucumber and Japanese rice. They even include wasabi in the set so that you can enjoy the twist in the flavours of the dish. For me, it is really fresh and the tuna is served cold to preserve its original taste.

#3 Mini Salad

At the first glance, I can only see a generous amount of fattening mayonnaise and I try to avoid the whole bowl later on.

#4 Tonkatsu Tuna Salad @ RM 6.80

If you realise, it looks exactly the same as the bento set above except that it is served in a bowl rather than a bento box. Tonkatsu tuna flakes, tomato, cucumber and sliced lettuce are well-mixed with tonkatsu sauce which turns out to be a flavourful bowl of salad. No wonder it's categorized under the chef’s choice!

I never fail to fall in love with the homemade Tonkatsu sauce which makes the salad so special!

#5 Japanese Matcha Imo Series with Yam @ RM12.00

Imo simply means 100% premium Japanese sweet potatoes. The green tea vanilla ice cream is so soft that it melts away with the hot red bean paste easily.

The Imo series is a perfect marriage between hot and cold desserts. While sweet potato is served hot after deep-frying, the Hokkaido milk-based soft serve is very cold.

The best way to enjoy it is to spoon a bit of everything and have them together! Matched with the deep-fried yam balls, your burning tongue is immediately soothed by the fluffy ice cream!  How miraculous it is.

That's one of their signature dessert too. With no sugar added, the authentic flavour of this yummy Japanese dessert is revealed.

Verdict:
1. The desserts here are of huge varieties; Each is so unique that I wanna try them all!
2. The portion is not as generous as expected when comparing with its price.
3. Revisit? Definitely yes, since it's so conveniently located around the shopping malls.

Bobalicious Smoothies @ Paradigm Mall, Kelana Jaya

It's the trend of going healthy now--- Cut down the nasi lemak, roti canai and seasonal durian time, and let's indulge some nutritious goodness, the healthy Smoothie!

#1 Let's Go Green and Fruity!

If you think it's very similar to Taiwanese bubble milk tea, then you're wrong, because Bobalicious serves no artificial colouring, flavouring and sugar in its smoothies! No more hassle of thinking whether to go 'Full Sugar' or 'Half Sugar' like what we usually do in some beverage franchises.

#2 Bobalicious Kiosk in front of Tesco @ Paradigm Mall

The recently-opened Paradigm Mall has never failed to capture the hearts of shoppers with wide varieties of food. If you can't decide on one, then I'd say do substitute your breakfast, lunch or dinner with a glass of fresh juice or healthy smoothie at Bobalicious!

 #3 Assorted Healthy Smoothies

From left to right:
1. Avocado Delight @ RM10.90
(Avocado, Peach, Banana with Yoghurt + Low fat milk)
2. Berries Blast @ RM7.90
(Blueberries, Strawberries with Yoghurt + Low fat milk)
3. Cappuccino Fantasy @ RM9.90
(Cappuccino, Roasted Hazelnuts, Oreo with  Low fat milk)
4. Peach Cooler @ RM7.90
(Peach, Lemon with Yoghurt + Low fat milk)
5. Matcha Crunch @ RM9.90
(Pure Green Tea, Matcha, Oreo with  Low fat milk)

One of my dining companions especially enjoys the rich cappuccino drinks, with added crunchiness from the oreo bits. But for me, the green tea ice blended tastes great, and healthier in a way with less sweetened flavour yet not too pungent in matcha.

Apart from smoothies and juices, Bobalicious offers savoury food to kill your hunger pangs
such as salad, sandwiches, pasta and lasagna.

#4 Caesar Salad @ RM7.90

Between a choice of house salad or caesar salad, we choose the latter one--- meatless but with crunchy bread croutons. However, such simple concoction of tomato, egg and fresh vegetables is never complete without the dressing.

Here we add the sweet, tangy house dressing which I find it outstanding
with little burst of salty cheese powder.

#5 Egg Mayo Sandwich @ RM9.90

For a light bite, a stack of sandwich layered with egg, ham, cheese and vegetable is good to go with some crispy tortilla chips. I'm not really a bread person, but I find this enjoyable for a group sharing.

#6 Bolognese Baked Cheese @ RM12.90

For a cheesy fanatic like me, I can already sense its goodness when the cheese aroma wafts in the air. served with a tomato-based sauce. The best moment arrives when the hot, melting cheese oozes with hints of sweetness!

#7 Chicken Lasagna @ RM12.90

This is quite similar to the Bolognese Baked Cheese, with equal enjoyment of the cheese with creamy tomato-based sauce. However, the pasta sheet is rather thick and slightly tough but well-balanced up with the tender chicken meat chunks.

#8 Turkey Ham Olio @ RM9.90

Unlike many oily pasta I've sampled, it is lightly sauteed and finished with aromatic olive oil. The pasta is cooked al dente to my liking and the mushrooms and turkey hams burst with flavours.

 #9 Tabasco Tomyam Pasta @ RM8.90

Much as I enjoy the turkey ham olio, my biggest applause has to go to this tomyam pasta. Soaked in the thick sour and spicy tomyam soup, the noodles remain springy with the crunchy nuts lightening it up. No complaints from the table about this plate of unique pasta!

Here's the healthy way to go. Bobalicious is currently doing a promotion of both set lunch and set dinner menu, price ranging from RM7.90 to RM9.90!

Verdict:
1. The smoothies are more towards crushed ices, than milky texture. Lightly sweet and refreshing, I enjoy it!
2. Recommended: Tabasco Tomyam Pasta
3. Pricewise, it is affordable and good to have a healthy cup of smoothie replacing main course!

Ramadhan Berbuka Puasa Buffet @ Kites Restaurant, Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie

Calling anyone who love exotic combination of international cuisine:
The Ramadhan Celebration buffet is back!

This year, Kites Restaurant @ Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie has gathered the master culinary hands of Arabic, Mughlai (Northern Indian), Malay and Chinese-Muslim to present you the most satisfying buffet during this holy month of Ramadhan from 18 July till 18 August 2012

Set amidst 350 acres of lush tropical greenery, the resort-style Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie is a tranquil retreat, overlooking two 18-hole world class golf courses. Located 30 minutes from city centre, you can easily drop by anytime, be it a business tour or just a simple lunch!

Combined with the conventional Ramadhan feast, the contemporary interior of the restaurant is a perfect setting for a relaxed, casual atmosphere.

Overlooking a lush landscaped garden and pool, this year the buffet is extended to the poolside and Gazebo which makes way to comfortable, al fresco dining.

At Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie, you can break your fast under the evening sky, decorated with black canopies and a myriad of food stalls.

Flavours around the region are now housed in one, with designated area for each cuisine on the buffet table.

#1 Left: Chef Haniff (Malay Cuisine)
Center: Chef Santosh Chaniyal (Indian Cuisine)
Right: Chef Ebrahim Mohd (Arabic Cuisine)

#2 Briyani Chicken with Tomato Gravy

The highlight of the evening is no other than the Chicken Briyani, specially prepared by Chef Santosh. It is cooked over a long period of time so that the flavours to blend well together, and I have to admit it is really delicious for its many layer of flavours!

#3 Briyani

There’s always an option for vegetarian lovers. A simple bowlful of rice is enough to boast the goodness of the extraordinary Indian spices. It is simply light and fluffy, well-infused with unique sweet taste.

#4 Mahi Sarsom Wali

Another item on the Mughlai menu shines as the star of the night! According to the chef, the slices of king fish are smeared in rich mustard paste and then cooked with intensely fragrant spices.

I'm totally smitten with the mild and rewarding curry. It is light and sweet with added hints of mild spiciness. The freshness of the fish is revealed through its flaky flesh, so delicious when dip into this exotic curry!

#5 Arabic Curry Chicken Sweet Curry

Next, Chef Ebrahim came all the way from Damascus, Syria to showcase his special sweet curry gravy. Lightly spiced with cinnamon, garlic and black pepper, the curry creates a delightful mix of chicken dish! Mild and sweet, it is much exotic than our usual dhal curry.

#6 Udang Galah Masak Kalio

While the Malay dish is deceptive in its spices, many different elements come together to create this platter of aromatic goodness. Chef Haniff's signature dish should not be a miss for some local flavours.

The king prawns are very aromatic in the coconut milk flavours, with lightly tossed chilli padi, lemon grass and turmeric leaves. The layers of sweet and spicy taste are very distinctive here.

#7 Tulang Rawan Masak Lemak Cili Api

Braised with turmeric leaves, chilli and coconut milk for hours, the short ribs are very flavoursome and
I just can't resist the tenderness of the meat! Again, this is mild enough for those who cannot stand hot spicy food.

#8 Grilled Chicken Kebab

The Arabic corner is never complete without the chef specialty grilled kebabs. The chicken cubes are grilled into perfection, quite juicy yet mild in taste.

#9 Szechuan Spicy Chicken with Black Vinegar and Hot Pepper Oil

Exclusively brought to you by Chef Charles from China, the fusion of Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine is impressive. I'm quite convinced if I were told this is pork because of its crunchy skin and soft crust.  But Kites restaurant is serving all Halal food, so this chicken cube has been really done nicely and it is not as spicy as I'd expect.

#10 Gulai Ikan Sembilan Tempoyak

Claimed as the specialty of the states of Pahang and Perak, I sample some of the catfish with a zest of lime. It has a very unique flavour, as it is braised with fermented durian paste. A little sweet and tangy, I believe it can go stronger in taste.

#11 Tarkari Tawa Masala

While my appetite is less than ample, I should not miss this vegetarian dish--- Pan fried vegetables curry. Served piping hot from the kitchen, I can taste the crunchy vegetables along with a traditional mixed flavour of spices.

#12 Baba Ganosh

The diced version of vegetables--- eggplants, tomatoes and onions--- makes a perfect dish of Middle Eastern salad. The added virgin olive oil and various seasoning add a lift to the dish, with a good ratio of sweet salty taste.

#13 Braised Bean Curds with Asparagus

#14 Tabola Salad

It is quite interesting to learn that it is actually pronounced as "Tak Boleh" (meaning "Cannot" in Malay Language). As a side salad to accompany all the dishes above, the finely-chopped parsley is very tantalizing with a zest of lemon juice.

#15 Hummus

Along with the grills and kebabs, hummus is a very appetizing dip mainly made from chickpeas. It is probably the lightest I've tried; A spread of premium ingredients and authenticity!

#16 Fresh Seafood (Mussels and Prawns)

Other delights that I expect during this Ramadhan feast is the icy fresh seafood at the Western corner along the buffet spread. One can't go wrong with fresh mussels at Kites Restaurant.

#17 Seasoned Fish

#18 Assorted Malay Kuih-Muih

The Malay cake and pastry are no longer unusual in Malaysia, but this is one of the best quality kuih which I probably can't sample it along the streets. They're of vibrant colours, but lightly sweetened and not cloying at all!

#19 Crepe Suzette

Putting an endnote to the scrumptious buffet, there is an assortment of Western cakes, ice-creams and the people's favourite ABC Ice Kacang for the perfect taste of tradition.

The buffet comes with a price tag of RM94++ (adult) and RM55++ (children & senior citizens)

2. Recommended: Mahi Sarsom Wali (Fish), Baba Ganosh (Vegetable), Hummus
3. Highly recommended for its exotic dishes, quality, and ambiance.
