CNY Yee Sang Promotion @ Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant (鑽苑) , One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya

Occasionally, when I write today's date on my notes, I'd unconsciously scribble 2012. I didn't realize it now becomes 'last year' already, what's more is that Chinese New Year is approaching and this round it's the Year of Snake according to the 12 Chinese zodiacs.

So my last visit to One World Hotel and Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant was last year, during Mooncake Festival. Honestly, I really miss their signature glazed chicken with ginger, therefore recently I am back for a second visit on my own, enjoying good food with my family and relatives.

Ushering the auspicious Year of Snake, Zuan Yuan has prepared new set menus for this festive season, comprising of starter, soup, main courses, desserts and most importantly, Prosperity Yee Sang that comes in many varieties. The following set menu we choose is RM998++.

#1 Zuan Yuan Four Season Hot and Cold Combination Platter
(钻苑四季冷热拼盘)

To start off an oriental dinner, we have this special dish, made of 4 appetizers combined into one to symbolize winter, spring, summer and autumn seasons of a year. My usual favourite Japanese cold salad is one of them, while the crispy deep-fried fish paste and fish ball are equally good to tantalize my taste buds.

#2 Braised Seafood Soup with Dried Scallop
(干贝海鲜羹)

Say no to shark fins. The set menu we chose serves seafood soup instead of shark fins because I always believe shark is the sea creature that suffers the most during Chinese festive season because we Chinese love shark fins way too much.

Surprisingly, the thick broth of seafood soup is very satisfying. The consistency is just right, and each spoonful is stuffed with oceanic goodness such as premium dried scallop, prawns and chunks of mushrooms.

#3 Roasted Chicken with King Soy Sauce
(豉油皇烧鸡)

Yums! It's a great way of preparing the chicken to allow diners to taste its freshness within the firm, tender flesh. The sauce is slightly thicker than usual, but it seeps into the bird, tenderizes and turns it a delicious dish.

#4 Steamed Sea Grouper with Olive Vegetables 'Teo Chew' Style
(潮式榄菜蒸海斑)

As for the fish, I personally have nothing much to shout about, but it is part of the important symbolic dishes during new year. A typical comfort food that you can easily serve it with a bowlful of hot steamed white rice.

#5 Wok Fried Tiger Prawn in "Medan" Style
(棉兰酱爆草虾)

Although I am a huge fan of crustaceans, unfortunately prawns are not on my list. The biggest surprise I've gotten during that evening is that the tiger prawns turn out so good that it becomes my favourite of all!

Cooked in Indonesian style, the sweet-spicy sauce is well-absorbed into the huge tiger prawns.
Overall, the crunchy fresh prawns are very appetizing, with added aroma from the sprinkle of spring onion.

#6 Braised Dried Oyster, Mushroom and Bean Curd in Green Garden
(蚝士冬菇豆泡伴时菜)

The delicious aroma wafts in the air as soon as the next dish is served piping hot from the kitchen. Slow-braised into thick consistency, this healthy dish is definitely suitable to neutralize my stomach after all the meats.

#7 Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice with Assorted Preserved Meat, Chicken Sausage and Yam
(芋香火鸡腊味荷叶饭)

Here's another aromatic dish which is irresistibly good and I'm looking forward to taste it because it can rarely be found except during Chinese festive season. To my delight, the yam rice wrapped in lotus leaf, retains its moisture and is very flavourful with chunks of preserved meat and sausage.

#8 Assorted Homemade Pastry
(阳城美点)

Before our dinner comes to a close, the 9-course meal is concluded with the perfect combination of hot and cold home made pastry. The deep-fried sesame balls are very crispy with the oozing lotus paste in it, so lovely to serve them with chicken floss. The chilled mochi, on the other hand, heightens our chewing pleasure as the smooth sticky balls go down the throat.

#9 Chilled Aloe Vera with Snow Fungus and Luo Han Guo
(罗汉果芦荟炖雪耳)

To wash down the meal is the cold dessert soup with popping balls of aloe vera that adds to my biting sensation. The portion served throughout the banquet is meant for 10 pax, but the chef has been really generous that evening and we can hardly finish our food.

Verdict:
1. Tastewise, they fall on a moderate mode, suitable for all types of diners, and thumbs up to the huge portion of food and great service in the restaurant!
2. Recommended: Wok Fried Tiger Prawn in "Medan" Style
3. Great option for reunion dinners and company gatherings during this festive season!

  3. Ahhhhh!!! No sharks fins! Good, very good! Pat on the back.

It's just a shameless, blatant show of one's opulence. Vanity at its worst! Senseless flaunting of wealth - for the mere sake of showing off. Ain't that some kind of sick mentality? And those things are, in fact, quite tasteless. Stupid is as stupid does.

    Save the sharks!!!
