Jacob Creeks Double Barrel Wine Pairing Dinner @ EGG - 8 Gourmets Gala, Bandar Sunway, PJ

An evening well-spent with Jacob’s Creek, the famous Australian winemaker's latest blend of unique red wines – the Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel – is a memorable experience on its own, taking home with me a well of knowledge about the great wine.

The newly-launched Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel comes as a pair, namely the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, which have been finished in aged whiskey barrels. So what is so special about the whiskey barrels? Well, it actually adds another layer of complexity and texture to traditionally barreled beverages. The resulting taste? Refined, intense and well-developed.

As each barrel performs differently, it takes time to understand the true effect on the wines. From careful selection of high quality fruit at the vineyards to the maturation process in French and American oak barrels and the finishing in old whiskey barrels, every step is taken with care, to ensure the wines achieve perfectly-balanced results.

With the longstanding tradition of wine and cuisines, Jenny Rothenberg, the brand ambassador, guides us through an experiential food pairing session of the cuisine and Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel.

APPETIZER
Pan-seared French Foie Gras
Wine Pairing: Jacob’s Creek Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir

Our gastronomical journey begins with the classic French foie gras. Its luxurious, buttery taste calls for a good sip of the fresh, vibrant sparkling wine such as the Chardonnay Pinot Noir. The champagne gives a balance to rich and creamy texture of the dish very well, especially with the added sparkle in the refreshing, lemony concoction.

SOUP
White Truffle Pumpkin Potage
Creamy, smooth and earthy; Delicious!

ENTRÉE
Smoked Turkey Drumstick
Wine Pairing: Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel Shiraz and Jacob’s Creek Reserve Shiraz

While the Reserve Shiraz's full-bodied palate and soft tannin structure pair well with the heavily smoked turkey drumstick, we appreciate the greater flavour complexity that the latest Double Barrel Shiraz offers.

Full-bodied, the palate is generous with a mix of sweet red fruits and dark chocolate. Traditionally, it exudes subtle toasty vanilla flavours, but the aged Scotch whiskey barrels finishing adds nuances of almond-husks and softer tannins to it, yielding extra smoothness to the wine.

The wine tastes extra good with strong, savoury dishes!

MAINS
Poached Lobster with Truffle Garlic Oil
Wine Pairing: Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon and Jacob’s Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

Compared to the Shiraz, I personally prefer the Cabernet Sauvignon -- A classic one tastes strong yet elegant with rich blackcurrant and plum flavour, supported by cedar and spice notes.

Whereas the Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon is more complex, structured and extra rich, all thanks to the unique Double Barrel technique of finishing in aged Irish whiskey barrels. On the mouth, the fine, dusty tannins give excellent line and length to the beverage, and are layered with sweet and toasty characters reminiscent of creme brulee.

The beautifully poached lobster tastes extra sweet and succulent when its flavour is accentuated by the delicious Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon. Love the juicy, delicate flavour of the lobster which comes from within!

Pan-seared Wagyu - Marbling Grade 9
Wine Pairing: Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon and Jacob’s Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

For another main course, we are totally smitten by the tender medium-rare wagyu which has a nice balance of lean and fatty layers. Cabernet Sauvignon, which is lighter than Shiraz, works well with the red meat as it opens up to show a beautiful core of rich blackcurrant and plum flavours. Smooth and complex, dense and balanced!

DESSERT
Premium Chocolate and French Macaron
Wine Pairing: Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel

Lastly, we are amazed that the Double Barrel wines go equally well with desserts. Unlike the usual sweet desserts, the premium dark chocolate is well complemented with the rich dark fruity flavour of Shiraz.
