[FOOD] Song Gye Ok Korean BBQ Chicken Specialist @ Telok Ayer, Singapore

Song Gye Ok, World’s First Restaurant Specialising in Rare Cuts of Chicken

We finally get to experience Korea's #1 Queuing Chicken Grill Restaurant, here in Singapore! Song Gye Ok is famous for serving only chicken for the Korean BBQ grill, with a specialty twist. The feast here is a celebration of flavours, textures, and preparations you have never experienced before.

The menu features six specialty chicken cuts, grilled in Korean style for the best texture and flavor. Unlike other K-BBQ joints, Song Gye Ok is strictly "No pork, No lard" in the kitchen.

From heart and gizzard to neck fillet and softbone, each cut is carefully selected and masterfully grilled to reveal its unique character. It's not just about novelty—it’s about honouring the whole bird, and uncovering the culinary potential that lies beyond the standard thigh or breast.

Star of the Show – SGO Signature Grill Platter

The Signature Grill Platter is a daring and delicious introduction to the rare cuts of chicken:

❤ Chicken heart – Delicate and earthy
❤ Gizzard – Firm and chewy with a savoury richness
❤ Tenders – The softest bite (my favourite!)
❤ Softbone – Crisp and collagen-rich
❤ Neck fillet – Slightly fatty with meaty flavour
❤ Thigh – A familiar comfort, but perfectly grilled

Each piece is kissed by fire, finished with just the right touch of seasoning, and served hot off the grill.

Chicken Heart goes well with Korean Seasoned Salt!

We have so much fun pairing our grill platter with a variety of house-made sauces and seasonings, each crafted to enhance the delicate flavours of each cut:

❤ Sancho Soya Sauce – A punchy blend with a citrusy zing from Japanese sancho pepper  (pairs well with Softbone)
❤ Sriracha Sauce – Bold, spicy, and slightly sweet  (pairs well with Tenders)
❤ Korean Seasoned Salt – Subtle, savoury, and balanced for umami-rich cuts (pairs well with Chicken Heart)
❤ Garlic Sauce – Deep and mellow with pickled garlic complexity (pairs well with Gizzard)
❤ Yuzu Shishito Sauce – Bright, tangy, and aromatic
❤ Pickled Shishito – A crunchy, tangy side with a mild kick (my favourite!) (pairs well with Neck Fillet)

My favourite Chicken Tenders are incredibly soft and melt-in-the-mouth!

Earl Grey Highball and the condiments / sauces

We enjoy the meal together with the house-made Korean White Cabbage Kimchi and Pickled Mustard which cut through the fats from the grills very well. The light, fragrant, and dangerously drinkable Earl Grey Highball is also the perfect pairing for flame-kissed bites.

Bibim Noodles

No great meal is complete without the perfect accompaniments. The Bibim Noodles – cool, chewy noodles tossed in gochujang sauce with crisp fresh vegetables – get us hooked at the first instance.

SGO Cheongguk Doenjang Stew

This rustic Korean classic made with fermented cheongguk doenjang, tofu, and seasonal vegetables is the best comfort in a bowl. I enjoy how the extra potent fermented soybean paste flavour adds savory umami depth to the stew.

Uiseong Garlic Fried Rice

Lastly, we are presented with the rich, fragrant dish on the grill. It features premium garlic from Uiseong, stir-fried with kkari pepper, soy sauce, and topped with golden egg yolk. The result? Ultra cheesy and garlicky in flavour. Highly recommended!

Overall Experience
The dining experience in Song Gye Ok is a reimagining of what chicken can be. By spotlighting rare and underused cuts, and pairing them with inventive sauces, traditional sides, and elegant drinks, Song Gye Ok invites you to taste, explore, and enjoy chicken in a way you never have before. Whether you are a food adventurer, a lover of Korean flavours, or simply curious to try something new, this is a culinary journey worth taking.

[FOOD] MODU Korean Samgyetang Restaurant @ Mandarin Gallery, Singapore

MODU (모두) ❤

Do you know that Samgyetang, or Korean ginseng chicken soup, has traditionally been known as a cherished, nutritious health food in Korea? Especially during hot summer months, people indulge in Samgyetang to keep up their "energy" and to "balance" their body heat with the soaring summer season outside. Samgyetang is therefore one of the most popular Boryang-sik (보양식) in Korea to boost health and air in recovery.

Here we are at MODU, Singapore’s first premium Samgyetang specialist to enjoy an elevated experience where the depth and richness of this 500-year-old Korean heritage is combined with innovation.

The modern Hanok-inspired interior feels as if we have been transported to Korea. With only 40 seats, including counter dining and private VIP rooms with Orchard Road views, MODU offers an intimate, reservation-only luxury dining experience.

The menu boasts 6 types of Samgyetang, promising a luxurious and wholesome feast that develops both health and elegance in every bite. Beauty, Perilla Seed and Collagen Herbal Samgyetang are amongst the popular options here.

Beauty Samgyetang
Chicken, ginseng, glutinous rice, garlic and jujube

MODU has taken the classic Boryang-sik (補養食) and HanBang Organic Chicken to the next level! They slow-simmer these premium ingredients with tender organic chicken, ginseng, jujube, and goji berries into a rich, collagen-packed elixir that works wonders for our skin, boosts immunity, and restores energy.

Each bowl of Samgyetang is meticulously slow-cooked for 12 hours, extracting every drop of goodness from the finest ingredients for a nourishing, soul-satisfying broth that will have you feeling amazing.

Perilla Seed Samgyetang
Chicken, perilla seeds, ginseng, glutinous rice, garlic and jujube

Our favourite is the perilla seed samgyetang because of the thick, creamy broth made of perilla seeds. It is so comforting with a hint of slightly sweet, nutty flavour. On the other hand, the chicken is so juicy and delicious especially when served with the salt and spicy dipping sauce.

Apart from the pickled cabbages that complement the meal, don't forget to pair your meal with Makgeolli or MODU’s exclusive artisan Korean liquors, for an authentic and premium experience.

MODU Appetiser - Crispy Seaweed

MiNaRi Pancake
Korean watercress pancake with Bori shrimp served with special dipping sauce

Our favourite appetiser is the Minari pancake made of a "water plant" - a cross between watercress and kangkong - exuding unique herbaceous flavours which I have not tasted before. Although deep-fried in oil, the crisp pancake is not greasy at all. The umami flavour of the shrimp in the pancake is pretty prominent and it goes very well with the sweet savoury soy sauce.

Tofu SamHap
Grilled tofu with fish roe, soft braised cabbage, and gamtae

We also enjoy the interesting platter - Tofu SamHap - which comprises of grilled tofu with rich savoury fish roe, braised cabbage and gamtae (dried seaweed). When enjoyed together, the combination offers a balanced and delicious mix of textures and umami flavours. Delicious!

GotGam Mari
Special combination of sweet dried persimmon, creamy cheese and walnuts

As fort the dessert, we are surprised by the lovely platter - GotGam Mari - which is a slice of dried persimmon swirled with cream cheese. The unique combination is surprisingly enticing to the palate, and not sweet at all.

Black Sesame Ice Cream
Creamy black seasame ice cream with a rich, nutty flavour

Last but not least, the black sesame ice cream makes a perfect ending to the meal as it exudes very strong nuttiness without feeling cloying on the palate at all. The crisp biscuit topping adds a nice contrasting crunch to the smooth ice cream. Highly recommended!

Roasted Bellflower Tea
Calming, alleviate cough and colds

Verdict:
Overall, we have a really good time tucking into the warm, collagen-rich Korean ginseng chicken soup in various flavours. The appetisers and desserts are great surprises for us, and they complement the meal very well too. Highly recommended for those who enjoy unique soupy meal.

[Food Review] Kimchi Dining @ Orchard Central, Singapore

Time for a fine Korean gastronomical adventure at Kimchi Dining! ❤

Fancy some delectable Korean treats amidst a lovely flower-adorned atmosphere overlooking the city view of Orchard? Then Kimchi Dining is the place to go!

Located on the 6th floor of Orchard Central, Kimchi Dining focuses on modern Korean dining concept. The menu offers ala carte dishes as well as set meals which are perfect for sharing. We choose the signature set meals for two, paired with Korean Makgeolli cocktails.

Makgeolli Flight - 4 Flavours of house made Makgeolli cocktails
(Fresh Ginseng / Jeju / Red Plum / Berry)

We are excited to kickstart the meal with the special Makgeolli flight, a beautiful set of 4 concoctions of famous Korean rice wine infused with different flavours. My personal favourite goes to the pure ginseng Makgeolli cocktail which is subtle and smooth, lending a cleaner taste on the palate.

Makgeolli Bread
(Korean wet market style bread, white bean butter with charcoal)

As we move on to the set meal for two, we are greeted with a lovely house bread as the starter. It is soft and fluffy, and goes so well with the rich, charcoal-infused white bean butter. Best served piping hot from the kitchen.

Kimchi Platter
(7 kinds of house fermented kimchi & pickles)

Instead of the usual “banchan” (side dishes), here we get to try a colorful platter of kimchi and pickles. Each of them has an unique taste on its own, and overall it is a great palate opener. However, do note that it is not refillable.

Gamjajeon (Korean Potato Pancake)
(Radish & onion jangajji, bacon, Siberian onion truffle mayo)

Another starter included in the set meal is the Korean potato pancake which is loaded with bacon bits and cheese shavings. A dip into the sweet-savoury mayo totally elevates the flavour of the dish. I’d love to return for this!

Iberico Pork Jowl SSAM
(Iberico pork jowl, Belgium endive, honey garlic, Chilli jangajji)

Meat lovers would rejoice when indulging in the Iberico pork jowl wrapped in Belgium endive with garlic and pickled chilli. Such delectable combination makes the pork jowl less greasy and more palatable. Highly recommended!

Jeju Pork Noodle
(Jeju style pork broth, charred pork belly, smoked chilli powder)

For the main, I am pleasantly surprised that the Jeju style pork noodle is so rich in pork bone flavour especially the collagen-rich broth, with an almost creamy-like consistency. Delicious!

Black Sesame Sundae
(Injeolmi, Black rice puff, Jujube syrup, Chantilly cream)

Chocolate Injeolmi Tart
(Velvety milk chocolate ganache, seasonal fruit, Korean injeolmi, dark chocolate dust)

The finale of the meal gets me excited as the dessert duo are so beautifully presented. The black sesame sundae is so rich and thick, with an added twist on the texture from the bite-sized rice puff. On the other hand, I am also delighted to find some fruity bites and injeolmi in the rich chocolate tart. What a pleasant surprise!

Verdict:
Kimchi Dining is an ideal place for authentic contemporary Korean dining, with great outdoor view of the Orchard area. Perfect spot for weekend dates, celebrations and large group gatherings in the heart of Orchard!

[Food Review] JOIE Korean Vegetarian Casual Fine Dining

Let's have a fine Korean gastronomical adventure at JOIE! ❤

Fancy some Korean vegetarian fine dining at the garden rooftop? Right in the heart of Orchard with a garden rooftop view, JOIE (pronounced as "joy") is a pure pleasure of gastronomical experience of modern meatless cuisine which enlivens the five senses.

The modern interior feels so lively yet exudes a flair of tranquility.

Embodying the Japanese-European flavours, our 5-course lunch menu includes a starter, side, soup, noodles and dessert. We truly enjoy the authentic Korean flavours curated in unique ways, as JOIE's meatless philosophy is well complemented by the vibrant flavours of fresh Korean ingredients and innovative cooking methods.

"Omija" - Korean classic welcome drink / palate cleanser

Jeju Tangerine Pear Tea

(Trio Starter) Watermelon with Jeju Green Tangerine,
Rice Chip with Truffle & Smoked Paprika,
Charcoal Eggplant with Korean Soy Sauce

First to arrive is the beautifully presented appetizer which comes in three little portions.
My favourite is the crispy rice chip which pairs well with the truffle and smoked paprika.

(Side) Charred Cabbage with Jeju Mandarin Puree

The cabbage is served as its best self: Grilled to charred, tender perfection, then doused in a creamy Jeju mandarin sauce and cheese shavings. Simple yet interestingly delicious!

(Soup) Pumpkin Rice Soup with Delicate Seaweed Panna Cotta

As for the soup, the pumpkin puree is extra sweet on its own. To my delight, the sweetness of the pumpkin rice soup is well balanced out with the savoury flavour of the creamy seaweed panna cotta.

(Myeon) 100% Buckwheat Noodle with Perilla Dressing

The noodles are surprisingly refreshing especially when drizzled with the oil-free dressing made with perilla seeds and a soy sauce base. Definitely a healthy low carb option!

(Dessert) Dried Korean Persimmon Cream Cheese Roll with Seasonal Fruit

Lastly, the finale of the meal is the showstopper of the day. The fresh crunchy strawberry and grape are wrapped with cream cheese and dried Korean persimmon - something that reminds me of the Japanese daifuku. Both are refreshingly light and juicy!

❤❤❤

(Side) Bailing Mushroom on Paper Hot Pot
Slow braised Bailing mushroom served on paper hot pot

Apart from the above premium set lunch, we also get to try the basic set lunch menu where there are plenty of options for each course to choose from -- Starter, side, soup, main and dessert. Each and every dish is, again, a pleasant surprise to us in terms of the complexity of textures and flavours,

(Soup) Japanese Kunbu Broth with Hand Carved Tofu
Double-boiled Japanese Seaweed consume with hand-carved tofu

(Main) Silk Lasagna with Broccoli Riso & Cashew Nut Sand
Layered pastry with chickpea, spinach, & tomato sauce roasted broccoli riso,
brussel sprouts, cashew nut sand

(Dessert) Red Wine Poach Pear with Lime Sorbet

Verdict:
It is a great place for contemporary vegetarian dining, with added Korean touch. No doubt it is the most reviewed fine dining and Singapore’s authentic Korean dining collaboration ever! Perfect spot for a romantic date too.
