[FOOD] Ramadhan Special: Ikan Bakar @ The Manhattan Fish Market

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is around the corner, and guess how are we celebrating it
at The Manhattan Fish Market

We love travelling and tasting food from around the world, how we'd wish to be able to travel overseas again soon! Given the current situation, Manhattan Fish Market is here to make our wish come true by bringing to us the flavours from the Middle East - Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar - with an added twist to suit the local Malaysian palate.

"Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar" features a whole seabass grilled to perfection and topped with Manhattan Fish Market's own secret recipe of Arabic spicy tomato sauce that is sure to tantalise our palate.

The menu comes in different sets to feed up to 5 pax. Now available at all outlets in Malaysia for dine-in, takeaway and delivery.

Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar

Truly a feast for fish lovers. Unlike many Ikan Bakar out there, Manhattan Fish Market's version is able to retain its juicy flesh while the smoky flavour is so prominent in every bite. Add a zest of lime and a dollop of spicy tomato sauce, and voila~ it is good to go with a warm bowl of garlic herb rice.

If you are here just for thes spicy savoury Ikan Bakar, here's a value set menu for you:

Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar Duo (for 2 pax)
(RM59.90 per set / Only RM29.95 per pax)

❤ 1 Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar (600g seabass)
❤ 2 Garlic Herb Rice

Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar with Flaming Lobster Set (for 5 pax)
(RM288.90 per set / Only RM57.78 per pax!)

❤ 1 x Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar (600g seabass)
❤ 1 x Grilled Flaming Lobster
❤ 2 x Garlic Herb Rice
❤ 4 x Chowder of the Day
❤ 4 x Strawberry Gembira beverages
❤ 2 x Vanilla Ice Cream topped with Fistikli Baklava

The more, the merrier! If you feel like enjoying more varieties of food, then try the Ikan Bakar with Flaming Lobster. I am excited to try out the Flaming Lobster already!

For any Flaming Platter you order, you get to enjoy the live flaming session at your table!

This set is totally worth the value, as it includes a huge fresh lobster with hand-battered seafood and mussels on a bed of rice. Not forgetting to mention that the accompanying dishes such as the chowder, rice, beverage and dessert are very well-portioned too.

Vanilla Ice Cream topped with Fistikli Baklava

One thing worth mentioning is the dessert which is infused with Middle Eastern flavours. The crunchy pieces of Turkish layered pastry which is rich in nuts and honey flavours, when enjoyed with vanilla ice cream, is a perfectly sweet end note of the meal. One of my personal favourite here!

Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar Bersama-sama Set (for 4-5 pax)
(RM159.90 per set / Only RM31.98 per pax)

❤ 1 x Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar (600g seabass)
❤ 1 Platter of Spicy Flaming Prawns, Fried Calamari and Volcano Mussels
❤ 2 x Garlic Herb Rice
❤ 4 x Strawberry Gembira beverages
❤ 4 x Chowder of the Day
❤ 2 x Vanilla Ice Cream with Fistikli Baklava

If you prefer a more affordable set, Manhattan Fish Market has gotten you covered. Apart from getting to enjoy the delicious Ikan Bakar, you can share the flaming seafood platter with your friends and family too.

My favourite seafood platter!

It comes with Manhattan Flaming Prawns, spicy mussels, hand-battered calamari and hot veggies,
on a bed of garlic herb rice. Definitely satisfying to the tummy!

Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar Gembira Set (for 3-4 pax)
(RM119.90 per set / Only RM29.98 per pax)

❤ 1 x Feisty Arabic Ikan Bakar (600g seabass)
❤ 2 x Garlic Herb Rice

Manhattan Fish Market has mixed and matched something for smaller group diners too. I find that this set is just perfect for those who are dining in a group of 3 or 4 as you get to savour the Ikan Bakar along with Manhattan Fish Market's all-time favourite seafood offerings.

Don't forget to check out the menu for many more seafood too!

Let's feast beramai-ramai at The Manhattan Fish Market!

SHUCKED Oyster Festival 2018 @ Southern Rock Seafood, Bangsar

Oyster and seafood lovers, rejoice! The annual SHUCKED Oyster Festival by Southern Rock Seafood is back!

Although I have long heard about this family-friendly Oyster Festival since a couple of years ago, this is my first time joining the fun and I am really excited for the fine selection of the world’s best seafood (especially oysters, of course!), speed shucking, drinks and live entertainment at the fest.

Southern Rock Seafood, Malaysia's fresh seafood distributor to many restaurants since 2008

Every year, Southern Rock Seafood hosts the SHUCKED Oyster Festival to gather us, seafood lovers, for a fun-filled day with the world’s best oysters amidst a friendly, bold and cheeky atmosphere. I do come across plenty of food festivals in UK, but it is my first time hearing a seafood theme in KL!

So we have gotten our vouchers from their website, getting ready for the feast of fresh oysters!

Taking the centre stage of the festival is definitely the wide range of the finest oysters from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, priced affordably from RM6 onwards per piece. The staff shucks the oysters right before our eyes and serve them fresh to our table in an icy bowl with lemon wedges.

Little did I know that there are so many types of oysters out there and each of them yields different tastes and flavours on the nose, mouth and palate.

Fresh Oysters from Tragheanna Bay, Ireland

People say, "Eating oysters are like kissing the sea on the lips"… Well, true indeed! Slurping the smaller 'nugget' sized oyster along with the oceanic brine gives a juicy, plump deliciousness on the mouth, with a lingering sweet to savoury finish. Love the umami flavour it gives!

Besides oysters, we get to try some of the popular dishes which are served in the kitchen of Southern Rock Seafood during the normal business days.

Look at the generous helping of prawns and mussels in the large pan of seafood paella!
I feel like digging into the wholesome pan of goodness right away.

Seafood Paella

Cod and Fries

Prawn and Squid Skewers

Legendary Angel Hair Mussels Laksa

If there is one thing that you must try there, it would be the award-winning Mussel Laksa featuring the fusion of premium plump Australian mussels and Malaysian laksa, along with a rich blend of tastes of lemongrass, galangal, coconut and kaffir lime leaves.

Oh did I forget to mention that the seafood tastes extra good with beer and wine?

Inside the restaurant, there are plenty of booze you can pair your seafood with.

As the name "SHUCKED" suggests, the shucking (oyster opening) competition is happening there too.

The fest also helps build world-class expertise in the Malaysian food industry by selecting the Malaysian Shucker for the World Oyster Championships in Galway, Ireland and the Shuck Off China World Cup.

Fizly Bin Norazlan, 2017 Malaysian National SHUCKING champion, who represented Malaysia at the World SHUCK-off in Galway, Ireland is defending his title at the semi-finals of our Malaysian Oyster Shucking Championships. The maestro Irish oyster grower, Edward Gallagher, is on hand to judge the shucking competition too.

In fact, this fest is a warm up for the full-scale SHUCKED Oyster Festival on Sunday, 2 September 2018, which will feature the Malaysian Shucking Finals, a wide range of seafood and other premium foods, several bands, and great fun in a large new venue (the huge empty lot opposite Southern Rock Seafood Kitchen & Retail). Can't wait for that!!

To keep our spirits high, there is a live jazz music performance serenading us while we tuck into a fresh, wholesome oyster feast, and Stanley the Clown keeping the young ones entertained with colorful balloons.

All in all, as a seafood lover, I am pretty satisfied with SHUCKED Oyster Festival this year. Totally don’t mind coming back for the world-class seafood and fuel my body with the healthy omega-3 oils, iron and minerals.

Hope to see you at the full-scale SHUCKED Oyster Festival happening this 2 September 2018, Sunday!

Weekend Seafood Brunch @ Steaks and Lobsters, Desa Sri Hartamas

Do you like the idea of relaxing at a brunch venue, with a huge ‘mountain’ of seafood served right in front of you, unlimited helpings of champagne and fresh fruits juices? Well, to me, it is definitely a YES!

Good news to the early risers, Steaks and Lobsters now open at 12 noon during Saturdays and Sundays to fill your hungry stomachs with fresh live lobsters and premium steaks.

The “surf and turf” concept pretty much reminds me of how the Australians love enjoying their weekend brunch with fresh seafood over champagnes. The only difference here in Steaks and Lobsters is, you don’t have to travel far to the coastal area for fresh seafood because they have it right there in the restaurant!

Interesting kitchen concept on the first floor of the restaurant.

Spacious dining area on the ground floor.

Our fine weekend begins with a sumptuous seafood feast.

The seafood brunch sets come in different portion sizes: 2 pax, 4 pax and 6 pax.
Ours is called the “Six Sigma” seafood feast (RM418) which is catered for 6 pax, consisting of:

▷ 12 Fried Oysters ◁
▷ 36 Fried Baby Squids ◁
▷ 3 Fried XL King Sea Prawns ◁
▷ 12 fried Barramundi Bites ◁
▷ 18 Fried Tiger Prawns ◁
▷ 3 Grilled XL King Sea Prawns ◁
▷ 3 Grilled Live Indonesian Crab ◁
▷ 18 Grilled Tiger Prawns ◁
▷ 24 Grilled Scallops ◁
▷ 4 Signature Free-flow Sides ◁

These two huge platters are the portion for 6 persons, that's really A LOT right?

I'm impressed by the freshness of the seafood! The lobsters here are alive – swimming in the aquarium. And only when the live lobsters are cooked upon orders, the sweet oceanic flesh falls off the shell easily! That’s the true enjoyment of lobsters we have in Steaks & Lobsters.

How to dig into the pile of seafood? First, allow the staff to add the
melted mild mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheeses onto the seafood!

Second, stay away from the cutlery and use your FINGERS!

Third, enjoy the seafood while served hot!

I personally love the creamy melted cheese part, which makes the seafood more savoury.

To complement the seafood feast platter, we have 4 types of house made specialty sauces:
Dark brown truffle sauce and Béarnaise sauce to pair with the grilled items, while
the zesty Lemon sauce and seafood Cocktail sauce for the fried items.

The golden batter-coated Barramundi Bites sourced from the deep sea of Australia,
similar to fish fingers, are so juicy and addictive!

And yes, they go really well with the tangy lemon sauce which cuts through the deep savoury flavours!

On the same platter, we order some add-on items to complete our seafood feast:
▷ Grilled Live 1/2 Canadian Lobster (RM90 each) ◁
▷ Grilled USDA Choice Black Angus Sirloin (RM115 per 300g) ◁

The tender sirloin cutlets are grilled over charcoal for that extra smokiness, then basted with cheese, how can I resist this? The beef tastes extra good with a dip into the rich, aromatic truffle sauce. You'd love it too if you are a fan of earthy ingredients.

Seafood aside, we have a couple of starters to begin with, while quenching our thirst
with the bottomless drinks which are available as an add-on too:
▷ Cold pressed fruit juices @ RM28 per pax ◁
▷ Sparkling wine @ RM58 per pax Champagne ◁

Steaks and Lobsters' Famous Portobello Fries @ RM19
Lightly battered, crisp, and it gives an extra kick from the Smoky Sriracha Aioli.

Sweet and Spicy BBQ Chicken Wings (8 pieces) @ RM25

4 drumlets and 4 winglets served in a crisp coating of tangy sweet BBQ sauce, with fresh celery and carrot sticks decorating the plate. But the chicken wing is really good! It tastes quite similar with the famous Korean fried chicken.

Steaks and Lobsters' Spanish Churros @ RM18
Don't say I did not remind you, this is highly addictive and you'd love the crispiness of the churros!! :P

Steaks & Lobsters' Weekend Seafood Feast
Day: Saturday and Sunday only
Time: 12noon - 3pm
Price: From RM138 onwards for 2 pax

During weekdays, they have different sets of promotional menu where
we can enjoy premium-grade steak and fresh-from-the-catch lobster at just a fraction of price!

Don't forget to redeem your FREE appetizer by spending RM200 in a single receipt!

Verdict:
1. To be honest, this generously-portioned seafood set is seriously no joke. We thought the food is not what we ordered initially because it appears so huge that it can easily feed 8-10 hungry eaters. We are already full to the brim when we manage to dig into 70% of the food.
2. My personal favourite? Lobster and sirloin steak of course!
3. Apart from excellent services, I am also impressed that the FREE Valet Parking will be available from 1 November 2016 onwards, with a minumum spending of RM100 in a single receipt, redeemable upon ordering.
