Cornery, The Popcorn Gallery @ Low Yat Plaza, KL

If you ask me what kind of food can be so popular and timeless over the decades, the first thing that comes into my mind is popcorn. Look at the long queue everytime you go for a movie, it seems like popcorn is a must-have movie companion. But recently popcorn has gone beyond that; It's time to experience a whole new world of endless possibilities...

Recently landed on Malaysia is Cornery, the popcorn gallery which offers an ultimate customer experience where you not only taste the popcorn, but also see, hear and smell it by yourself.

Originated from Singapore, Cornery is one of the popcorn connoisseurs to provide quality, gourmet popcorns to Universal Studios Singapore, Marina Bay Sands theatres and TGV cinemas in Singapore.

You may have already known many popcorn outlets in Malaysia, but what makes Cornery different from others is the open-concept kitchen that allows you to watch popcorns being made right before your eyes. Here you can sample, pick and watch how to make your favourite popcorns!

Great ingredients make great tasting food, that's why Cornery uses only United States grown premium popcorn kernels.

The first step of making popcorn is to insert popcorn kernels into the air popper, and allow it to expand. Yes you can make microwave popcorn / oil-popped popcorn, but Cornery chooses hot-air-popped corn because it is lower in calories, cleaner and healthier!

All the kernels are evenly popped, and in fact the sizes are pretty standard too.
I manage to grab a handful of the unflavoured popcorns, and they are chewy and smell good.

I love the concept of knowing what I'm getting. It's my first time experiencing the making of Cornery's bestselling flavour, Butterscotch Popcorn. Brown sugar and butter are left to boil, and once the concoction is ready, simply pour in the popcorns and stir them well.

The manual stirring process is pretty tedious as you need to continuously stir the mixture with extra effort, so that they will be evenly coated with butterscotch and will not clump together. Now I understand why the popcorns from cinemas are sometimes too bland or overflavoured sometimes due to automated stirring.

I didn't know that Cornery popcorns are all handmade until I put my hands on the making! And I love seeing the pools of mini popcorns that exude strong delicious aroma that fills the entire space.

Look at the cute babies! They're just so beautiful =)

In terms of size, color and flavor, the quality is pretty consistent for separate batches of popcorns. Besides butterscotch, it comes in an extensive variety of new, fun and unconventional gourmet popcorn flavours. To date, Cornery has the widest variety – over 22 flavours – ranging from original to candied as well as savoury, which includes the unique Asian flavours: Tom Yum, Curry, Wasabi, Tandoori Chicken, Kimchi and Seaweed.

However, for Cornery Malaysia, they begin their venture with 12 popular flavours, and today I get to sample 7 of the crowd's favourites. Besides Butterscotch that tops my favourite list, what comes second is the Peanut flavour that appears surprisingly moist and rich than what I've expected!

Others served in-store are Caramel, Black Sesame, Banana, Green Tea and Grape Soda. Another noteworthy flavour is Chocolate, because of its robust flavour from the Dark Chocolate that does not taste cloying at all. Banana is a welcome change from the range of fruity flavours too.

Well, my advice is, sample all you want before deciding which flavour to buy!

Cornery's gourmet popcorn is packed fresh upon order, because they know how disappointed you'd feel with pre-packed popcorn that turns stale. The airtight zipper and double sealing on its specially designed packaging  can keep the product fresh and crispy for 2 - 3 weeks, even in humid tropical climate!

(From left to right) It comes in 3 sizes:
Large Pack (2500ml) @ RM20
Regular Pack (1100ml) @ RM10
Grab Pack (700ml) @ RM7

Cornery Malaysia's first concept store is currently located next to Low Yat Plaza food court,
and you can notice the outlet from the roadside along Jalan Bulan.

If you're staying in Setapak, Cornery is coming nearer to you by the end of September 2013!
