Chinese New Year Promotions at Toh Yuen, Hilton Petaling Jaya

A brand new year always mark a great time for reunions with your family and friends, from far and near. For those looking for something different to feast on this Chinese New Year, I am sure Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant at Hilton Hotel PJ is a great place to hunt for contemporary new year dishes besides the traditional, classic favourites.

Newly revamped, Toh Yuen is set to impress discerning Chinese food connoisseurs with its exquisite Chinese New Year menus that associates modern touch in the well-loved traditional Cantonese fare and delectable dim sum, served in its renewed, invigorating and stylish interiors.

To celebrate this festive season, Chinese Executive Chef Sam Lu has crafted numerous auspicious pork-free set menu, priced from RM1288++ to RM1988++ per table for 10 persons. The set that we were having was "Love in Abundance (喜结连理配套)" priced at RM1588++ per table of 10.

#1 Fresh Salmon with Chinese Pear "Yee Sang" (雪梨三文鱼捞生)

Our culinary journey here began with the Chinese New Year must-have prosperity salad, featuring thick slices of fresh salmon along with the varying shades of tartness from pickles, lime juice, and fragrant lime leaves. For a milder taste of sweetness, I'd opt to pour 3/4 cup of the thick plum sauce into this textural marvel.

Jellyfishgeoduckbaby abalone and other condiments are also available
as nice additions to this auspicious dish.

#2 Braised "Fatt Choy" with Crab Meat Soup (香茜发菜蟹肉羹)

Brimming with chunks of freshly shelled crab meat and silky smooth angel's hair, the viscous broth was soul-satisfying good. It tasted excellent with the fresh oceanic ingredients and non-greasy soup base. Simply indulgent and comforting!

#3 Steamed Fish with Onion Oil and Light Soy Sauce (香葱头蒸海斑)

Served on a pool of light soy sauce, the traditional-style steamed fish had a very mild flavour and beautifully retained the rich taste of its succulent white flesh. If it's fish that you fancy, nothing would satisfy more than the fresh catch.

#4 Simmered Chicken with Cantonese Galangal Sauce (广沙姜靓糟鸡)

Moving on to the poultry dish, a dip of chopped spring onions together with ginger and its jus lent a noticeably robust dimension to the tender whole chicken. I would definitely appreciate another helping of that sauce because it was so addictive!

#5 Tiger Prawns with Chinese Herbs (药活草虾)

While herbs were added, the fragrance did not mask the essence of the crunchy tiger prawns. The entire combination came together beautifully and was definitely a favourite among seafood lovers.

#6 Braised Top Shells with Stuffed Oysters, Broccoli, Mushroom and Abalone Sauce (玉鲍蚝豉发财丸)

Delicious aroma wafted in the air as soon as the next dish was served piping hot from the kitchen. Slow-braised into thick consistency, this symbolic platter of wealth and prosperity was definitely suitable to neutralize my stomach after all the meaty portions.

#7 Crispy Fried Rice Noodles with Seafood (鸳鸯脆皮河粉)

This comforting platter of noodles then took us by surprise as it was layered with textures from the silky smooth rice noodles at the bottom, to crispy fried noodles on top. You'd expect the seafood assortments (fresh prawns, clams and fish) to outnumber the amount of noodles too.

#8 Left: Steamed New Year Cake with Shredded Coconut (椰丝软年糕)
#9 Right: Chilled Osmanthus/ Sweet Olive with Lemongrass Jelly (桂花芦荟香茅冻)

Sweet endings for the meal were assured with the delicately refreshing chilled lemongrass jelly, faintly enhanced with sweet osmanthus. Back to the classic rendition of Nian Gao, we were also served with steamed glutinous rice cake coated with crunchy shredded coconut. Both were nicely done without being overcloying, making them the crowd's favourite festive sweets during this season.
