[FOOD] Tommy Thongchai Thai Gastrobar @ Jaya One, PJ

Let's indulge into the porky feast and get drunk! :P

Located at Jaya One, in the heart of PJ, Tommy Thongchai is one of the very few Thai gastrobars in town that wows me with its distinctive Thai fusion menu, cocktails and cool vibes.

This is not a spot to fix your usual tomyam cravings, but rather a place to enjoy an elevated gastronomical experience of Thai-inspired food injected with local and Western flairs. Let's check out some of the signature fusion dishes that you should try here...

Tommy's Platter @ RM85
(Fried calamari, fried pork belly, fried pork riblets, Chiangmai sausages,
pulled pork fries, Thongchai's nachos, luncheon meat fries, moo ping skewers)

The No.1 crowd's favourite here is this huge porky platter which we can easily wipe up while downing some cold beer, one glass after another. Don't say I didn't warn you, it is highly addictive and calorie-dense too.

Assorted Charcoal Grilled Skewers @ RM5 to RM19 per stick

If I must name one favourite item from the platter, it'd definitely be the Moo Ping (pork skewer)! The taste is as good as those I had in Bangkok, so juicy and flavourful. Apart from pork, they also serve chicken, beef, lamb and mushroom skewers.

Pineapple Fried Rice with Pork Belly Skewers

Another highlight on the menu that pairs equally well is the Thai fried rice, which again, is loaded with pork skewers, and accompanied by fried egg, crisp cracker and house specialty Thai chilli sauce. This carb-loaded platter is recommended for sharing too.

How about some Thai-style fried noodles? Give your senses an instant kick of spiciness!

Thongchai's Sizzling Caesar @ RM26
(Spam croutons, Thongchai's caesar dressing, onsen egg, whole romaine lettuce)

The menu also features a long list of Western favourites such as salad, nachos, pasta, chicken chop, salmon steak, grilled Australian beef steak, etc but interestingly, all of them have one thing in common: Each dish is injected with Thai ingredients to bring out a whole different dimension of flavours.

Kale Salad with a Crunch @ RM22
(Fresh kale, Thongchai's kale dressing, Thai chilli flakes)

Thongchai's Mango Salsa Nachos @ RM28 (Extra Large)
(Mango salsa, coriander aioli, wonton skins)

My favourite goes to the ultra-crisp wonton skin, loaded with creamy tangy mango salsa sauce. So appetizing!

Pan Seared Salmon Trout with Mango Salsa @ RM59
(Salmon trout, mango salsa, coriander aioli)

The salmon steak is worth a mention too, all thanks to the sweet and sour sauce with a zest of lime juice.

Black Angus Steak @ RM127 (285g) / RM149 (340g)
(10oz or 12oz grain fed black angus ribeye, in isaan marinade or Thongchai's dry rub,
then charcoal grilled into perfection, and served with Thongchai fries)

Krapao Pork Burger @ RM28
Thai-riffic Fish Burger @ RM28
Laarb Moo Tod Burger @ RM28

Oh did I forget to mention that the Laarb Moo Tod Burger (deep fried Thai herb pork patty, laarb slaw and Thongchai's fries) is a major hit too? Must try for first timer! The chunky meat patty is so well-marinated with Thai spices that it exudes strong flavours on every bite. Delicious and sizeable portion too!

Tommy Thongchai offers something that tastes closer to home too, including 'wat tan hor' (flat rice noodles in thick egg gravy), wan tan mee, pork trotter rice, etc.

Pork Trotter Rice @ RM21
(Braised pork trotter in Thai style, kailan, hanjuku egg and Thai Jasmine rice)

When the sky turns dark, Tommy Thongchai is transformed into a drinking hole, where you can enjoy a wide array of unique Thai cocktails specially prepared by the resident mixologist. Some of the cocktails may be more potent than the others, so choose wisely :P

Here's the No.1 must-try cocktail in the house! A unique creation using the ingredients from a classic bowl of tom yam, concocted into an electrifying glass of cocktail. How cool, right?

So, come early if you want to enjoy the Happy Hour promotion, or chill a little longer after dinner and enjoy the live band performances. Let Tommy Thongchai make your evening unforgettable with a whole different Thai fusion cuisine and cocktail experience!

Verdict:
1. Ideal spot to chill after work and enjoy good food, booze and music all under one roof.
2. Suitable for birthday celebrations, special occasions or large group events too.
3. Recommended: Tommy's Platter, Moo Ping Skewer, Laarb Moo Tod Burger
