CNY 2017: Celestial Court, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur

It's time for celebration! I love how every year begins with a massive Chinese New Year celebration, and this year let's usher into the Year of Rooster with an abundance delectable menu by Chef Ho Boon at Celestial Court, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur.

The exclusive limited-time Chinese New Year offerings include the lunar set menu, ala carte dishes, Yee Sang varieties and Koi Fish Chinese New Year cake. They are available from 2 January  to 11 February 2017.

Celestial Court (天寶閣) Chinese Restaurant makes an ideal venue for CNY gathering with family and friends as this grand Cantonese restaurant is beautifully adorned with artifacts and exclusive contemporary artwork that reflect the elegance and grandeur of China’s royal dynasties.

The attention to detail not only focuses on the decorative items but also on the service. Empty and used plates are never left too long on the table as the attentive staff constantly replaces them with new ones, while they make sure the tea cups are filled throughout the meal.

富贵长捞起 锦绣鲜果三文鱼捞生
Prosperity Norwegian Salmon Fish Yu Sheng with Assorted Pickled Vegetable
and shredded Fresh Fruits served with Traditional Plum Sauce

This Chinese New Year, the Yee Sang here comes in 5 types (Sliced abalone, Norwegian salmon fish, crispy soft shell crabs and jelly fish with delicious dressings), mostly injected with a refreshing flair of fruits to cut down the calories and enhance natural sweetness of the platter.

Aside from the thick Norwegian salmon slices, we appreciate the complementing pickled vegetables and shredded fresh fruits which combine well with the traditional condiments and add juiciness into the overall taste. Plus, the sweet plum sauce is not overcloying at all.

Price of Yee Sang starts from MYR 88nett onwards for half portion.

金鸡报喜 南洋风味烧鸡
Roasted Corn Fed Chicken served with Spicy Onion Sauce

Every Chinese New Year meal should include a whole chicken, symbolising prosperity, joy and togetherness of the family. The roasted bird this year comes in special Nanyang-style sauce with a spicy kick. Texture wise, the meat is very fluffy on the inside and we enjoy the outer crispiness on the skin too.

金玉满堂 金香虾婆
Fragrant Golden Jin Sha Style Spicy Slipper Lobster

Besides poultry, the dishes that come next are all catered for seafood and vegetable lovers. Among all, the star of the evening is of course the slipper lobster drenched in special Kam Heong (金香 / Golden Fragrant) sauce-- something different from the usual dry version we often see elsewhere.

Beautifully coated with the thick, richly flavoured sauce, the fresh slipper lobster easily falls off the shell and then fills the senses with well-balanced flavours of aromatic spice and seafood sweetness. It's so good that I can pair the sauce with a hot bowl of plain rice.

双喜临门 带子虾仁炒夏果甜豆
Wok fried Fresh Scallop and Shrimps with Sweet Bean and Macadamia Nuts

Another symbolic dish which suits the healthy goers is the sweet crunchy combination of fresh juicy scallops, shrimps, sweet beans and macadamia nuts. Simple and hearty, it is our favourite classic Chinese dish.

满堂喜庆 海皇粒扒羊肚菌时蔬

Seasonal Vegetable with Morel Mushroom Topped with Diced Seafood and Crab Meat Roe Sauce

Similar to the previous dish, we have another vegetable-seafood dish which is endowed with strong oceanic sweetness from the diced seafood and crab meat roe sauce. We also appreciate the use of highly-prized morel mushroom in crunchy, large size for an added crunchiness to the dish.

富贵吉祥 螺鲍扒玉带
Braised Abalone Top Shell Meat with Scallop and Black Mushroom In Supreme Oyster Sauce

The Chinese New Year feast is not complete without this braised vegetables dish. The consistency of the sauce is just nice to coat the premium ingredients evenly to impart a delicious savoury flavour. Rich, sweet flavours in just enough sauce to coat the beans: we love it!

步步高升 香煎年糕
Pan-fried Traditional Chinese New Year Cake

Sealing our dinner with a sweet ending, we are fortunate to try out Chef Ho's handmade traditional Chinese New Year glutinous rice cake, pan-fried with light eggy batter into golden perfection. The overall taste is lightly sweet with minimal oil: nothing too heavy for the palate and easily wash down with a cup of Chinese tea.

Exclusively for this festive season, you can order the cute creative Koi Fish Nian Gao as a gift to someone special. Price starts from RM88 nett onwards for small twin Koi Fish.
