How to Prevent Skin Damage

Your skin plays an important role in protecting your body because it is the first line of defense against pathogens. Therefore, taking the necessary steps to maintain and promote healthy skin is highly recommended. The process of promoting the health of your skin does not have to be complicated or time-consuming because you just need to undertake simple protective measures or change your lifestyle. It is important to understand the steps or measures you need to take because skin damage can result from numerous causes, among them are chemical irritation, smoking, exposure to sunlight and free radicals, etc.

Here are some of the ways you can prevent skin damage:
1. Use a cream cleanser

Cream cleansers are recommended to those people who have sensitive or aging skin because the cleansers have moisturizing/hydrating agents which do not affect the skin’s natural oils. However, when choosing a cream cleanser, you need to be very cautious because they are numerous. The first thing you need to determine is the condition of your skin and secondly the ingredients used in making the cream cleanser. For instance, if your skin is oily, products that does not over dry your skin or make your body produce excess oils. The right cream cleanser should keep your skin stable thus preventing over-drying and any irritation that may arise due to dryness.

2. Use a moisturizer

A cream cleanser will not only help you open the skin pores, but also ensure that your skin is in perfect health. To keep the skin healthy and prevent skin damage, during the day you need to use a moisturizer that contains sunblock. The sunblock will protect your skin from long exposure to the sun during the day. Dermatologists recommend the use of a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor of at least 15. If you are looking to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays of the sun, look for combination moisturizers. However, if you don’t know the right moisturizer to buy, you can seek professional help from an experienced dermatologist.

3. Use an anti-aging product

As you age, your skin can develop wrinkles or lesions because your body is deprived of nutrients, natural oils and other products that promote skin health. Therefore, as you sleep, you need to apply an anti-aging product. You can get a recommendation or a prescription from your doctor/dermatologist. However, if you would like to buy over the counter (OTC) prescriptions, you need to look for specific ingredients that will promote healthy skin. Ascorbic acid (vitamin c), retinoic acid and glycolic acid are the three ingredients you are supposed to be looking out for when buying an anti-aging product. It is important to understand that using anti-aging products that contain antioxidants or any peeling agents offer better results, although they can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

Even though these products can help you prevent skin damage, getting professional advice or opinion is very important. Therefore, if you are spending a lot of money buying over the counter products and you have minimal no positive skin changes, seeing a dermatologist is the best option.
