Restoran Yu ShiFu (魚師傅清蒸金鳳魚) @ Bandar Puteri, Puchong

Bandar Puteri is a blooming commercial area in Puchong, with a huge standing Giant supermarket on one side, and hundreds of eateries on another. Moving deeper into this area is a few blocks of newly developed shop offices, and I'm surprised to discover a new hidden gem along the quiet street.

魚師傅:The Master of Fish

Opened its doors since last November, Yu Shi Fu was relocated from its former outlet at Puchong Jaya. It is a comfortable place for casual dining, run by a Chinese family. True to its name, their speciality is of course the fish! Freshwater tilapia fish farming is common in Malaysia, but rarely the fish is inhabited in sea water.

Here Yu ShiFu claims that their tilapia fish is grown in sea water, resulting in a better quality of breed. The fresh stock is brought in from Sungai Besar every 2 days, therefore the fishes are generally fresher, with more flaky flesh and no muddy taste.

The simplistic interior allows patrons to dine in comfortably as the restaurant is kept clean and well lit.

#1 Signature Sea Tilapia (招牌蒸金鳳鱼) – Original (From RM16 onwards)

First to wow us during the evening is the steamed sea tilapia in soy sauce, topped with shredded ginger. Unraveling the flaky white flesh, the fish maintains its oceanic freshness and I can hardly notice any earthy taste. Thumbs up!

#2 Signature Sea Tilapia (招牌蒸金鳳鱼) – With Chillies (From RM16 onwards)

To spice up the dish, the sea tilapia comes in a spicy variation whereby chilli and ginger are used as main toppings. Similarly, the medium-sized fish tastes fresh and soft without any sign of being overcooked. Definitely a lovely dish to pair with a bowlful of hot steaming rice!

#3 Deep-Fried Marinated Pork (南乳炸肉) @ RM15(S) / RM22(M) / RM28(L)

Among the porky selection, the deep fried pork with fermented beancurd marinade tops the list of recommendation. The beautiful aroma wafts into the air as the pork cutlet is served. I enjoy this crispy, flavourful dish although the meat inside is rather dry for me.

#4 Marmite Pork Ribs (妈蜜排骨) @ RM15(S) / RM22(M) / RM28(L)

Topped with sesame, the pork ribs are glazed with thick marmite sauce. Equally satisfying,
the ribs are juicy and sticky on the outside and acceptably tender on the inside.

#5 Tofu with Meat Topping (菜香豆腐) @ RM10(S) / RM20(L)

Next is a very popular Chinese dish that often makes its way to my family's dining table at home. The crispy, deep-fried bean curd is velvety smooth and soft inside. Combined with the fragrant minced meat, this dish is absolutely appetizing and tasty.

#6 Kung Pao Squid (宫保鱿鱼) @ RM12(S) / RM18(M) / RM22(L)

Apart from fish, the seafood variation here includes squids and clams ("La La"). Slightly different from my favourite street food, Squid Kangkong (鱿鱼蕹菜), the spicy stir-fried squid here is more savory and heavier in taste. It is a welcoming change from the usual dry version of Gong Bao dishes.

#7 Fried Eggs with Bittergourd (苦瓜炒蛋) @ RM10(S) / RM12(M) / RM15(L)

The spicy and deep-fried dishes come one after another, and finally there is a platter of eggs with bittergourd to cool down our body. Crowned with some fresh prawns, each bite of the thinly sliced bittergourd is so crunchy and comforting!

#8 Kangkung with Sambal (马来风光) @ RM8(S) / RM10(M) / RM12(L)

#9 Mix Beans with Sambal (四大天王) @ RM10(S) / RM12(M) / RM15(L)

The remaining two vegetable dishes are cooked with sambal belacan, but the level of spiciness is toned down according to customer's preference. I prefer the latter one which comes in a dry version, with contrasting texture and taste from each type of vegetable.

Besides the traditional Chines tea, they serve golden barley which incorporates bits of pumpkin and barley to create this interesting drink. Unlike many sweetened barley drinks, I love the creation by Yu ShiFu as it boasts the natural sweetness from pumpkin itself.

For better body cooling effects, do try the Coconut Water.

Some of the signature dishes in Yu ShiFu.
