GAB Oktoberfest Food & Beer Pairing with Tai Zi Heen @ Prince Hotel & Residence, KL

It’s Oktoberfest again! And in conjunction with this famous festival, Guinness Anchor Berhad (GAB) has lined up a 3-course beer pairing promotion to celebrate "For The Love of Beer" with Prince Hotel and Residence Kuala Lumpur's signature Chinese restaurant, Tai Zi Heen, from October 1 to 31.

Among the GAB's products (Tiger, Guinness, Heineken, Anchor, Kilkenny, Strongbow, Paulaner, Anglia Shandy and Malta), GAB has picked the best to pair with each dish for the best enjoyment.

#1 APPETIZER

Our gastronomical journey began with the world's No.1 stout GUINNESS to pair with the appetizer.

On individual portion, the premium Wok Seared Five Spice Salt Dusted Foie Gras (中式煎鹅肝) was served sizzling hot from the kitchen accompanied by the Beijing Smoked Duck Wraps Drizzled with Passion Fruit Vinaigrette (烟熏鴨卷).

I was expecting heavy aftertaste from Guinness, but I was wrong. I was totally surprised that the complex 5 spices on the foie gras were balanced with the sweet bitter Guinness. The light sweetness of the passion fruit added an refreshing twist to the dish. Perfect as a palate opener.

#2 SOUP

Next, we put away the strong Guinness and it was time for a light blend of bitter-sweet cider and culinary apples. Strongbow is milder in taste, a great option for those who have low tolerance towards alcohol.

As for the Hot and Sour Seafood Soup with Unagi-Parmesan Stick (四川酸辣汤伴芝士鳗鱼卷), the unique flavours of Strongbow came alive as it went very well with cheese and complemented the sourness.

Keith Nair, the GAB's Beer Ambassador explained that we should have a sip of Strongbow first, then take a bite of the cheese stick and finally enjoy the soup. The overall aftertaste is so smooth and harmonious that I didn't expect at all!

#3 MAIN COURSE

If you're a fan of German pork knuckle and sausages, then the German wheat beerPaulaner must be something you're craving for. Cloudy and unfiltered, I quickly had a sip upon serving, before it was warmed by the room temperature as Paulaner is best consumed at 0°C to 4°C.

With my expectations further lifted up, we had the authentic Chinese Honey Soy Glazed Oysters on Asparagus and Toasted Sesame Seeds (豉油皇生蚝芦笋) to make the beer taste sweeter and fresher. While the sweet savory oysters were bursting in flavours, Paulaner did a great job in balancing the heaviness and sweetness.

Another chilling glass of Paulaner was brought to us as soon as the Baked Cod Fish with Garlic Crust (蒜油焗鳕鱼) was served. It was my favourite of the evening because of its flavourful crusty skin, followed by a light aftertaste from the beer. The crust layer was cheesy with strong garlicky aroma, without overwhelming the natural sweetness of the cod.

Don't belittle this fastest growing beer, Tiger, it also goes hand-in-hand with fine Chinese dining.

Next was a classic dish, Kong Poh Style Chicken with Dried Chillies and Cashew Nuts in Yam Ring (佛钵宫保爆鸡丁), with its roasted and spicy aroma wafting in the air. A helping of Tiger enhanced the sweetness of the whole dish, and what better was I've totally forgotten the slight bitterness from the beer itself.

#4 DESSERT

To end the meal on the right note, a very beautifully presented dessert was served on the table, followed by a pint of Strongbow. It won the wows from the diners of the evening with its creative presentation.

Paired with Strongbow, the Purple Sweet Potato Garnish with Mango Ice Cream accompanied with Lotus Paste Chinese Pancake (紫番薯芒果雪糕拼莲蓉锅饼) was suitable even for those who were watching their weights. Sweet and refreshing, it was a perfect cleanser to wash down the heavy meal.

Special thanks to GAB, Chef Michael Wong and his culinary team for bringing the authentic Cantonese food into the realm of contemporary cuisine with dishes that emphasize original flavours with a modern twist.

Oktoberfest is incomplete without the limited edition GAB's Oktoberfest 1L Ceramic Mug
You may grab yours here or alternatively own it by purchasing a 1L Tiger beer at selected bars and clubs.

"For The Love of Beer" 3-Course Beer Menu
Venue: Tai Zi Heen, Prince Hotel & Residence
Duration: 1 - 31 October 2012
Price: RM150++ per person

Each dish will be paired with Tiger, Guinness, Strongbow and Paulaner.
Each diner can take home a special limited edition GAB's Oktoberfest 1L ceramic mug.

Verdict:
1. A modernized Chinese fare made me totally speechless! The beer and Chinese dining complement so well with each other.
2. This luxurious meal is perfect, you'd love it even if you are not a beer lover.
3. The only downside is, drinking different beers at the same time may make you go tipsy. Watch your consumption and don't drink like a fish! :)

The Manhattan Fish Market (MFM) New Menu 2012

Hi readers, welcome to my 'home', one of the leading seafood restaurant chain in Malaysia. Manhattan Fish Market (MFM), a renowned brand that needs no further introduction to you guys.

In keeping the menu fresh and exciting,
MFM has recently added a taste of new temptations,
featuring the best shelled seafood--- Mussels

#1 Baguettes (Complimentary with NEW dish)

Our gastronomical journey starts off with the warm baguettes, unlike many restaurants who serve cold breads. Slightly crunchy on the outside and soft inside, it is simply good even on its own. Perfect as a palate opener with its light savory taste.

#2 *NEW* Stewed Tomato Mussels @ RM14.90

A true seafood affair with the extraordinary sauce! Unlike the local tomato gravy, Stewed Tomato Broth is rather creamy and rich in garlic and herbs. I'd go for another basket of breads just for this aromatic sauce!

#3 *NEW* Savoury Sea-esta @ RM18.90

For the health conscious, try the fish fillets, mussels and scallops in a clear broth with celeries and herbs. And the winning part is of course the light broth; So flavourful and robust with the natural seafood sweetness.

#4 *NEW* Spicy Sea-esta @ RM18.90

Among the new items, Spicy Sea-esta, a perfect blend of seafood (mussels, scallop and fish) with loads of onions cooked in sweet-spicy and tangy broth, is my favourite of the day. The strong spicy broth is nicely done without overshadowing the fresh taste of seafood.

NOTE:
These 3 new features will be launched in November, but are already available at all MFM outlets in Malaysia.

#5 Citrus Mint @ RM8.50

Before we continue for more, we take a break and enjoy some crushed ice in refreshing lemon juice with a dash of cool mint. Sourish in taste, it is indeed cooling with a minty aftertaste.

#6 Cala Cala @ RM8.50

Despite of its name, this beverage is one of the winning tastes with a great combination of calamansi and lemonade. As refreshing as the Citrus Mint, it is more suitable for those with low tolerance towards sourness.

#7 Fried Country Mushrooms @ RM9.90

Another light bite has caught my attention. The Cajun Honey Mustard is a welcome change from the usual dips. Light and sweet, it complements well with the platter of deep fried button mushrooms as a snack or side dish.

#8 Do The Flame!

Finally I get to experience the specialty of MFM myself. Whenever you order prawns, the experienced staff will perform the art of Manhattan Flaming Prawns right in front of you. Feel the heat and enjoy the prawns right away!

#9 Small Flame @ RM29.90

As I love my meals to be freshly cooked a la minute, the famous flaming prawns lure me with its freshness and rich smoky flavour. Served on a bed of Garlic Herb Rice and Chips, I enjoy the fish fillet grilled in such a way that it retains its moisture and flakiness without being mushy.

#10 Giant Fried Platter @ RM55.90

As for the giant platter, the name speaks for itself. The large portion can serve up to 4 pax as it comprises a giant mix of fried fish nuggets, shrimps, calamari and fried country mushrooms. Served piping hot from the kitchen, the seafood is so crunchy even to the last bite! The different textures combined in the dish creates a perfect taste even for those who may not quite fancy seafood.

#11 Manhattan Flaming Seafood Platter @ RM52.90

We have another sharing platter where the famous fish fillet, calamari, oysters and prawns meet as one. At most of the western food eatery, I'd find that the prawns are rather small, but MFM is of the opinion that size does matter and is being generous with the serving here.

#12 Mediterranean Baked Fish @ RM16.90

An exclusive dish for fish lovers is served upon me. The garlicky aroma from the baked rice wafts in the air, with a mixed concoction of flavours from spices and coriander on the fish. The meat is deboned and so soft that it serves well even for young kids, complementing well with the spicy and sour light sauce.

#13 Gummy Bear @ RM8.50

My second drink for the meal has got a really cute name. The winning combination of Curacao and tropical fruit mix works perfect for a warm afternoon. Interestingly, it has two layers of blue and yellow liquid upon serving. And then it turns lime green after being stirred.

#14 Blue Lagoon @ RM9.50

A glass of lemonade with Curacao and a scoop of ice cream is to put an endnote to the sumptuous meal. This beverage is rather creative, simply great as a thirst quencher or dessert for me as it is not too sweet but still flavoursome.

Approaching 180 years in existence, Manhattan Fish Market has spreaded over the world, now conveniently located at major shopping malls around Malaysia. Special thanks to iLoveDiscounts for the sumptuous meal!

Urbane Bazaar @ First Subang Mall, SS15 Subang Jaya

Which day of the week do you enjoy the most? TGIF?
Weekdays are just bleh for me, coz' I'd be rotting after long tiring days of classes...

But now I discover something new! What about hitting the mall, strolling around the bazaar for some good bargain on Thursdays and Fridays of the first and last week of the month

I find it a really good way to release stress!
Shopping, hands up if you love it the way I do :D

#1 Trendy Korean Fashion

My eyes go wild when I see clothes! Dear all mummies out there, Urbane Bazaar offers lots of baby and kids garment. They're just so cute that I swear I'd buy a lot if I have younger niece and nephews!

Bags, accessories and chic stuff are all sold at very reasonable prices.

I'm a fan of fourfeetnine (Audrey), and follow her Instagram. I spotted her wearing this pair of cute heart sandals when she was on the trip to San Francisco for honeymoon + work. And guess what I found at the bazaar!!!

It looks exactly the same right? And I bought one pair ^____^

#2 Sweet Pastel Stationeries

The mini stuff there attracts me alot! I'm just so into cute stuff from Korea, they're so lovely and I'd bug my mum to buy them for me if I were 10 years younger lol.

#3 Accessories for your Favourite Gadget

#4 Gadgets and Electronics

To be fair enough, the bazaar is not just for girls :P I found some techy stuff for the guys too, but I'd still hop over to the booth because the guy looks kinda cute HAHA.

#5 Watches and Jewelleries

Here are some cheapo gold and diamond that shine twice brighter than the genuine ones!

#6 Korean Earrings

If you have a thing on something original and unique, do drop by at this stall for some handmade earrings with over 200 patterns to choose from! Nothing is above RM10 here, that's really affordable right?

More female accessories on the go. Priced from RM5 to RM30, I am torn between different colours and designs. Here you can find almost everything you need to match with your attire of the day. I think it's much cheaper than the flea at The Curve every weekend.

#7 My Purchase of The Day

I only paid RM1 after lots of discounts from generous First Subang Mall and fashion vendors.
:) I am a happy girl after shopping.

Sherlyn's Little Dream & 32°F @ First Subang Mall, SS15

After numerous visits to the First Subang Mall @ SS15, Chatime is no longer my favourite hang-out place as soon as I discover this little dessert shop, Sherlyn's Little Dream at the Lower Ground floor, serving a medley of cakes at affordable prices.

#1 Cute Sherlyn's Trademark

Sherlyn, the owner of the store, as well as the baker of delectable cakes and cookies, is a pretty young lady who is pursuing on her dream in baking good desserts. Her main focus currently is on tiramisu, chocolate and cheese varieties.

#2 Brownies @ RM3.10

The brownie is something different for me, with slight crusty on top, while dense and chewy inside. Overall it provides a rich chocolaty pleasure. Best served when warm, and I'd love to top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

 #3 Oreo Cheese Cake @ RM7.90

My favourite at Sherlyn's place is this piece of delicate and extremely gooey cheesecake. The bursting flavour of oreo cookie is very evident on top, inside and at the base, providing a crunchy biting enjoyment.

 #4 Light Cheese Oreo @ RM7.90

I can't notice much difference of this from the previous one. Despite of the light cheese flavour, I find it more creamy and not as dense with oreo chips. This petite cup of treat is just right in size for one to indulge.

 #5 Little Devil Chocolate Cake @ RM7.90

I can tell it's an absolute perfect cake for the chocolate lovers. Filled with richness of chocolate, the crust is very creamy while on the inside the chocolate sponge layer gives a dense, chewy texture. The little detail like chocolate ganache topping completes the sinful chocolate indulgence!

 #6 Tiramisu @ RM7.90

Sherlyn's specialty dessert is actually the famous Italian dessert, tiramisu. However, it is disappointing because I personally prefer creamy cheese texture with the slightest bitterness of coffee. Well, perhaps the chef has been rather generous on his application of coffee that day.

 #7 Nescafe & Local Coffee @ RM4.90 each

  #8 Cute Butter Cookies @ RM3.90 each

I'm a happy kid when I look at the colorful cookies hanging like some fruits on tree. Sherlyn has paid much effort decorating the homemade cookies with fondant, and I spot my favourite Bunny design there too!

  #9 Sherlyn's Little Dream & 32°F Kiosk

The bakery kiosk located a few steps away from the Giant Hypermarket is actually linked with 32°F, a dessert house serving flavoured shaved ice ranging from the green tea, coffee to assorted fruity flavours.

If you're not a fan of chocolate and tiramisu desserts, you may still drop by for their cooling bowl of soft shaved ice desserts.

Verdict:
1. A nice spot for tea time especially for cheese and chocolate fans, although securing a seat may be tricky as the kiosk is rather small.
2. Recommended: Oreo Cheesecake and Brownies
3. Pricewise, the cake selection comes in a huge slice which is worth every penny you pay.
