Kurata Japanese Fine Dining @ Park Royal Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Japanese restaurants are aplenty in Malaysia, but upscale Japanese fine dining is few and far between. I'm glad to discover this new kid on the block at Park Royal Hotel Kuala Lumpur that serves authentic edomae style sushi, seafood shabu-shabu, tempura and sukiyaki in an authentic way just like how it is traditionally served in Japan.

Kurata welcomes every guest with a personalized note; What a wonderful gesture! Apart from the impeccable services from Japanese staff dressed in kimono, I'm also amazed by its comfortable dining setting that makes one feels at home.

Ala Carte Sushi (8 Pieces) “Suzu” @ RM110

What not to be missed here is the Edomae style sushi, a traditional type of sushi topped with freshly caught, raw fish. In fact, Kurata serves up to 20 types of raw fish to please the most discerning palate! For edomae novice or sushi lovers, it is best to visit Kurata on Tuesdays or Fridays because it is exactly when the freshest seafood is delivered all the way from Japan to the restaurant!

But...beware of the dollop of wasabi in each sushi if you can't take the sharp flavour.

Premium Japanese Wasabi

Did I forget to mention that even the Wasabi is imported from Japan because good ones are too rare in Malaysia!

Fatty Tuna (Otoro), that melts in the mouth!

Flounder (Hirame)

Botan Shrimp (Botan Ebi), authentically served with tail folded over towards the shrimp meat

Scallop (Hotate)

Gizzard Shad (Kohada), Salmon Roe (Ikura)

Most fishes are served raw at its original state, but other fish such as gizzard shad and mackerel are cured with salt and vinegar to further enhance its original strong flavours. I prefer having them in original tastes that satisfy the palate with its freshness and juiciness.

3 Egg (Tamago), Minced Fatty Tuna (Negitoro-Maki)

Included in the sushi set of 8, the egg cutlet is a pleasant surprise to all of us, because it has a very soft texture, strong eggy flavour and no extra sweetness added into it. Now can I have another helping of this?

Ala Carte Seafood Shabu Shabu @ RM155 for 2 pax

If raw fish is not your choice, Kurata also offers Sukiyaki, Tempura and the signature Seafood Shabu Shabu. Here we can sit back, relax and enjoy watching the staff preparing the seafood shabu-shabu right at the table for best timing to eat. We get more excited when the aroma of soup stock fills the air of the VIP room we dine at during the evening.

To keep the broth at its lightest flavour, Kurata uses a vegetable broth comprising of Japanese seaweed, soya, mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine), natural dashi and sake, which can help to further enhance the natural oceanic sweetness of the seafood ingredients such as Angel Shrimp, King Crab, Snow Crab imported from Hokkaido.

True indeed, the broth is very clear and light, and every spoonful explodes with seafood goodness. Despite of being excellent to be consumed on its own, the ingredients are also served with Sesame sauce and Ponzu (Citrus-tangy, soy-based sauce) for those who love to explore different pairings of flavours.

DESSERT
チーズケーキ 黒糖とシナモンの香り
Cheese Cake with Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Crust @ RM24

Desserts are essentially the perfect endnote of the sumptuous dinner. We are introduced to more modern offerings such as soft baked cheese cake served with strawberry sauce and fruit sorbet, creme brulee as well as ice creams that come in assorted flavours.

紅茶のクレームブリュレ
Earl Grey Creme Brûlée @ RM24

アイスクリーム(胡麻、柚子、抹茶)
Ice Cream (Yuzu / Sesame / Green Tea) @ RM12

If you're looking for a good place to unwind and dine after work, Kurata is an ideal venue as it offers a huge variety of high-end Japanese alcoholic drinks as well as special dinner courses for both business and casual gatherings.
